tonight. let's check in with monika samtani. if you do the beltway in prince george's county, you need to pay attention. you do. we're talking the east side of the beltway in prince george's county where there was a serious early morning accident. it happened before 3:00 on the inner loop of the beltway. that's southbound 95 after route 50 where only one lane is getting by in each direction. let me show you first what it looks like live there. three vehicles involved, including a fire truck, a tractor-trailer, and a jeep. if you are planning to head to the beltway, look at the work they have to do. to of those vehicles were overturned. again, this is a live picture here on the inner loop south of route 50 in the landover area. let's go to our mdot shot so you can see what's getting by. this is going to be this way for a while. one lane in each direction of the beltway. that means serious delays as well early on this morning. choose your alternate routes. maybe on the inner loop use 450 to route 50 to get around it. 450 to route 202 as well will
5:02 am
work. if you are one of those that uses route 50, you can access the beltway but heading southbound on the beltway, this is what you will hit with only one lane getting by. the beltway here in college park looks okay. again, it's those heading southbound on the beltway that will be affected by this. we'll have more details coming up in a few minutes. back to you guys. >> thank you, monika. more on that story. breaking news from prince george's county. the beltway crash. several firefighters are injured. >> the fire truck collided with a tractor-trailer and an suv on the beltway. wusa9 reporter delia goncalves is live at the scene with the latest information. good morning to you, delia. >> reporter: good morning. this is a pretty dramatic scene. seven people have been transported to the hospital. four prince george's county volunteer firefighters, to of them in very serious condition. we can now tell you that we know for certain according to some eyewitnesses here on the scene that it appears the tractor-trailer rear ended the fire truck. here to explain a bit more about what we know is fire

that the rating is. >> reporter: this was unusual, that this was a moving vehicle. talk about that and in relation to the injuries we have. >> normally fire truck accidents we have, normally it's because they're blocking the scene of an active accident and get hit by something. it's unusual to have an accident of this severity where the fire truck is actually moving and struck by another vehicle. so the county police accident investigation team has taken the lead to figure out whammed. they're working with the state police. they'll have more information on that. >> reporter: you said earlier the fire truck is in pieces and the overturned tractor-trailer has spilled its contents on the ground. >> the fire truck is in pieces. the tractor-trailer did not actually spill its contents. we believe it's food in the tractor-trailer. it is contained but the oils and all the other materials from the fire truck and the tractor-trailer are on the road. >> reporter: our best with the fire department and our thoughts are with you. we hope for the best for those four volunteer firefighters. we will remain here on the scene and bring you the latest information as soon as we get it.

welcome back. just about 5:10 on this wednesday morning. this very mild wednesday morning. we have 60s already south of town. once again 60s and 70s this afternoon. it will be different, though. more clouds today and more wind. winds are going to be gusting at times over 30 miles an hour this afternoon. we're going up towards 70 for that high. watch out for some showers and storms. more likely tonight than this afternoon. i'll be back in a few minutes with a look back toward reality. right now here's monika with timesaver traffic. a tough reality here on the beltway in landover. inner loop south of route 50, you're looking at a live picture of an accident that happened before 3:00 this morning involving three vehicles, one a fire truck. one lane will get you by in each direction. we're hearing it's going to be that way for a while. i'll have details coming up in my next report. mike and jess? more checks being written by bp. it's 5:10. here's a look at what's coming up this morning. bp will have to pay the largest

5:14 am
5:15 am
it is currently 53 degrees outside. >> fredricksburg 65. >> it's january. >> january 30. we're going to get back toward winter weather the next couple of days but one more really ridiculously warm afternoon with temperatures up toward 70, give or take a few. yesterday i thought it would be in the upper 50s, low 60s. we got 2069 in town. -- got to 69 in town. there were low 70s in spots. it was a very gorgeous tuesday around here. jessica is still smiling, dancing over that one. here's your day plan forethis wednesday. another mild day -- for this wednesday. another mild day but more clouds and more wind. we could see showers and storms wet but i'm thinking the -- west, but i'm thinking the bulk now will be after dark. by 5:00 we're still in the upper 60s. the winds, what a difference. at times they'll be gusting over 30 miles an hour so it won't feel as nice. west of town as you head west of fauquier county toward i-81, the blue ridge west, we have a
5:16 am
wind advisory in effect at noon till 6:00 tomorrow morning. some of those gusts could get to 50 miles an hour, especially in the higher elevations. we'll have to see if we get some of those thunderstorms tonight that could also produce strong to severe wind gusts. we're looking at some clouds streaming across the area but nothing on the radar close to us now. there's still a little bit of cold from central pa north. providence is 36. south of town, charlottesville, richmond, andrews already 60 degrees. it's near 70 at this hour. charleston, west virginia 68. locally we also have a big range from 56 in centreville to 45 up in frederick. it's 41 at bwi. but 56 in alexandria right now. and even in waldorf, you're enjoying 59 degrees this morning. good visibility here in town on our michael & son weather camera with a temperature of 53 under partly cloudy skies. winds starting to pick up agent bit south at 11 and the humidity is also high. 86%. but we're south of the warm front. you can see the cold still up in maine at 25. but a new surge of argument
5:17 am
irair coming -- of arctic air coming toward north dakota, montana. ahead of that is the warmth. there's a pretty impressive storm system here that has a powerful cold front. snow falling behind it. you see the dark blue, the heavy snow from kansas city to des moines. this is tracking in toward wisconsin. ahead of it heavy showers, thunderstorms. these are tornado watches from mississippi all the way into kentucky at this hour. we're on the warm sector today but late today, really tonight, we're also going to have a threat for severe weather for the entire area. the main threat will be damaging wind gusts and any of these storms that come across could bring some of those winds aloft down to the surface and really get gusting. here we are looking at storms late this afternoon but the bulk of them will be coming in during the overnight herd. here's 9:30 and we're still waiting for those storms to come through. definitely colder for tomorrow. your forecast today 70. some late storms. i think the bulk after dark. yellow alert for the storms tonight. we've got windy and colder weather tomorrow. 48.
5:18 am
potentially even colder than that in the afternoon as the cold air really comes in by friday with morning flurries, 33. saturday groundhog day, 36. 38 sunday. back to 44 on monday. monika samtani stepping in now. still talking about problems in prince george's county and elsewhere. i have a feeling we're going to be talking about this problem in prince george's county all morning long. it happened before 3:00 this morning. we're talking about an accident involving a fire truck, a st., send a -- a truck, a tractor- trailer and a jeep south of route 50. so you consider that sort of the landover area as you leave new carrollton. only one lane is getting by in each direction. let's take a look at the scene right now from our mdot camera. one lane is getting by in each direction. i have a feeling that it's going to be there for a while. our delia goncalves is on the scene there. she just spoke to prince george's county fire chief bashoor and he tells us again expect this to be here for a while with not only the cleanup with three vehicles overturned
5:19 am
i believe but also with itself investigation that will also have -- the investigation that will also have to happen at the scene here. we know four firefighters were hurt, two seriously as well, seven in total transported to the hospital. so you can see what a mess it's been since before 3:00. this is the inner loop of the beltway south of route 50 in the landover area with several vehicles involved. so again we'll keep you posted on that. if you want to avoid the delay on the inner loop, use route 450 over to 202. it will get you around that accident and you won't have to sit in any delay. if you're traveling on route 50 itself, you can exit on the beltway, by the way. let's take a quick look elsewhere. in rockville, everything is okay. want to let you know about a water main break, though, southbound georgia avenue after aspen hill road. two right lanes are blocked there as well. lots to tell you this morning. mike and jess? >> thanks, monika. see you in a bit. the architect of the champion ravens talks about his team in the super bowl.
5:20 am
>> question of the morning now. the washington golf show question of the morning, which city has hosted the n.f.l. super bowl more than any other city in the u.s.? is it a, new orleans, b, phoenix, or c, miami? >> our facebook friend blare says it's all about the party. she writes, new orleans. it's the most fun. >> put your answer on our facebook page. if you get it right, you have a chance to win four tickets to the washington golf show at the dulles expo center in chantilly. one winner will be randomly selected
5:21 am
5:22 am
5:23 am
welcome back. howard here. your weather first. 5:22 on this wednesday morning. this very mild wednesday morning. 50s, even 60s south of town right now. we're going to see more clouds than sunshine and more wind than yesterday as temperatures will climb well in the 60s by noon. in fact, i think we may be even warmer than 64. the rain concern, though, north and west of town this afternoon, even early this evening, greater than here in the metro. looks like those storms come through tonight. some of those could be on the strong side. good morning, everybody. we're coming to you from the mercedes-benz super dome in new orleans. we're headed into day three of super bowl week which means all the craziness of media day, which was tuesday, is over. now it's time for the teams to get down to business and focus. media day is good for us media
5:24 am
folks because we not only get to talk to players about the big game but also some team personnel that we usually don't get access to. that includes ravens general manager ozzie newsom. he said was the coach's decision to fire cameron and promote caldwell. caldwell didn't change much in terms of plays. he just brought in a different approach. >> after jim had had eight or ten weeks to be with joe, i think he has something he can build off of, you know. now you're seeing the approach of that. >> i can't say, you know, the coach went in and reinvented the wheel. he calls the same plays. >> reporter: there might be some familiar faces playing in super bowl xlvii for redskins fans. you have ravens defensive tackle who played for the redskins in 2010. but more familiar is former first round pick carlos rogers.
5:25 am
since leaving washington and coming to san francisco, rogers has thrived as a 49er. in two years there, he's already recorded the same number of interceptions it took him six years to get in washington. even though he gets to play in a super bowl for san francisco, he still has fond memories of playing in d.c. >> if it weren't for washington, i probably wouldn't be here today. like i said, i enjoyed them. i still go back sometimes. it's a great organization. right now i'm enjoying this. i'm in the super bowl with this team. i wouldn't want to be nowhere else. >> reporter: the excitement of super bowl week continues today. the players get down to business and start practicing a little later this morning. we'll bring you all the excitement from new orleans starting again this evening. for now, that will do it for me from new orleans, i'm kristen berset. have a great day. time right now is 5:25. money can cause a lot of problems when it comes to love. we're going to have some expert relationship advice on keeping
5:26 am
your finances in harmony. that's coming up. >> good luck with that. >> plus, we have a live report also from some breaking news. delia goncalves is live on the beltway. firefighters are injured in this. and your morning commute is going to be a mess. monika? >> we're talking about the beltway in landover, inner loop south of route 50. you're looking at a live picture right now where two lanes get by northbound. one lane southbound is going to be there for a while. i'll have details for you i'll have details for you coming up in my next we gotta sell the car. where would we even start? get the car. hi howard. get in. hi, good to see you. start with an actual written offer when selling your car, no strings attached. carmax. start here.
5:27 am
5:28 am
5:29 am
12k3weud a. thank you for starting your day with us. time right now is 5:29. i'm jessica doyle. we're glad you're joining us. i'm mike hydeck. monika has big news on the beltway. howard has weather. it's going to be warm. we do have storms coming.
5:30 am
most of you won't see them till after dark. if you're northwest of town, you'll see them later this afternoon. probably tonight is when the bulk of the rough weather will be pushing through the metro. the later it gets, the better it is in the form that it won't be the daytime heating, the storms won't be as bad. here's a look at your day planner. we're starting mild. we're finishing warm. high temperatures today around 70 about 4:00. skies will be mostly cloudy by 8:00. then i expect a much better chance of showers and storms approaching the metro as temperatures then still well up in the 60s. average high for january 30 is 44 degrees. nothing happening here, but this big line of showers and storms extend from the gulf coast up into michigan and canada right now with several tornado watch boxes from kentucky down through parts of alabama and mississippi at this hour. and this is the line of storms that will be slowly approaching us for the evening and nighttime hours. 53 in town. 41 in baltimore. look at the mid-60s
5:31 am
fredricksburg. luray is 63. hagerstown still a chill in the air there. only 37. but it's going to be another warm afternoon from the mid-60s north to the low, even mid-70s toward tappahannock and we're looking at around 70 incredibly warm degrees for january 30. watch out. some of the storms this evening and tonight could be strong to severe. here's monika now with timesaver traffic. a very serious accident on the inner loop of the beltway happened before 3:00 this morning south of route 50 in the landover area with only the left and right sides of the roadway getting by in each direction of the beltway. in fact, our delia goncalves is live at the scene with the details. delia? >> reporter: well, we just got an update from the fire chief who told us that one of the four injured firefighters, very critical condition, has been transported to union memorial hospital in baltimore. we're told that hospital deals with injured limbs. whether or not those limbs are going to be amputated or they're serverred in some way. we know that one of the
5:32 am
firefighters is dealing with some very critical injuries and was just transported to baltimore union memorial hospital. let's take a look at the scene, still very act ef. they're going to be here for some time. we know that fire truck in pieces. the fire chief tells us. let's take a look at some video we shot so we can at least get you a little closer to the scene. the fire chief confirms this crash happened just before 3:00 a.m. a fire truck returning from another accident by route 50 was rear ended by a tractor- trailer here on the inner loop of the beltway. the vehicles spun out, overturned, crossed the jersey barrier. hit an suv traveling on the outer loop. seven people in all have been transported to the hospital. among them, as i mentioned, four volunteer firefighters from west lanham hills fire station. two of them in serious condition. the chief still here on the scene but he tells me momentarily he's heading to the hospital to be with those firefighters. let's listen to what he told us just a short time ago.
5:33 am
>> no injuries at this point appear to be life threatening. however, there are several priority one, what we call priority one significant trauma patients to the fire department members. the fire engine is probably totaled. it's in pieces. the equipment still needs to be picked up, towed out of here and taken to our facilities. the tractor-trailer of course is on its side. it is full. again we believe with food. it's going to take quite some time to get that overturned. >> reporter: you heard it from the chief. this is going to take some time, several hours snarling up the morning commute. you can see it's already doing a lot of damage to the commute so far. we have two lanes here opened in the inner loop. traffic is moving very slowly. if you can avoid the area, you probably should. you have some advisories and detours, monika, for folks? >> yes, i do. thank you, delia. what she's told us is two lanes are getting by on the inner loop of the beltway by the
5:34 am
accident scene. i believe as delia said, that's going to be the situation for a while. i'm going to step out one more time and show what you it looks like live from our sky 9. again you can see that two lanes are getting by now in each direction at the accident scene. as you just heard the prince george's fire chief told us that with the cleanup and the investigation, you can expect this to take all morning long for this situation. so what you need to do so get around it is probably on the inner loop, go ahead and use route 450 to 202. head back to the beltway that way. you will be beyond the accident scene. it may take you a little longer than normal but these people need space to clean thup on the inner loop of the beltway southbound 95. same story on the outer loop northbound as well. choose your alternate routes this morning and avoid the beltway in prince george's county here in landover. we'll have more information for you throughout the morning. mike, back to you. >> thanks, monika. we'll see you in just a bit. this morning on capitol hill, the senate judiciary committee is holding a hearing on gun violence. the people are scheduled to
5:35 am
testify and include wayne lapierre from the nra. things could get pretty emotional with the testimony of mike kelly, husband to gabriel giffords. this all follows last month's elementary school shooting in newtown, connecticut. >> passions run high on this issue. there's no question about it on both sides. >> illinois democrat dick durbin may see some of those high emotions from his fellow senate committee members. california democrat diane fine fine has introduced a bill that is going to revive the ban on assault weapons. she's expected to grill lapierre saying the government needs to enforce the laws already on the books. today at noon governor martin o'mall is going to deliver hiate ofthe state a. he's probably going to see a rally as he leaves the state house, by owners and supporters of pit bulls. they're gathering in support of
5:36 am
a bill that would undo an appeals court decision that designates the pit bull breed as dangerous. it's led to some landlords trying to evict tenants who own pit bulls since they could be liable for any injuries if the dog bites. time is 5:36. i'm watching your money and your love life. the beatles sang "money can't buy me love" but money can ruin a relationship. financial disagreements lie at the heart of more than half of all divorces. i spoke to money expert tim johnson for love advice. he says even a big spender and a big saver can make it work. >> it can be a problem, but it can be overcome. for example, a relationship is supposed to work where one person and one person are stronger than they are individually, right? and so by taking a person who is a big spender, spending isn't bad. it's just unconstrained spending is bad. then of course saving is good,
5:37 am
but being a miser or a hoarder, that's not good. so hopefully these people by sitting down, communication, can meet somewhere in the middle and their relationship and finances can be stronger as a result. >> as a couple comes together, as they decide to sort of join forces together, what do you think about the concept of having separate money versus shared money? some couples say that's just the way to go, to keep separate finances. what's your opinion on that? >> i think probably in most cases putting them together, at least being aware of them makes sense. you can keep your own checking account if you'd like. that's a matter of convenience. but if your finances are truly merged, you should have information to share between the two of you. for example, my wife and i once a year have something called the shareholders meeting because we're both shareholders in the relationship. we've been married for 20 years. we're both shareholders in our finances. so we sit down.
5:38 am
it's really simple. we talk about how much money we have, how much money we've made, where it's invested, what our insurance might be, and whether we're on the track for the future. that's a healthy thing. >> let's say it's time to pop the question. we have valentine's day right around the corner. i bet a lot of engagements are going to happen. thoughts from you, tim, as we head into this big romance season. >> well, romance is a good thing, you know. and valentine's day is a positive thing. there will be a lot of candy. there will be a lot of flowers but the candy will be eaten and the flowers will be thrown away. what can work is, you know, looking at your finances in a constructive way. that could last throughout your entire financial lifetime. so you might sit down and the two people talk about -- of course you know you're physically attracted to each other or your personalities match or you like or don't like, your in-laws, but then sit down and think about not about, you know, the picky
5:39 am
things or investigative things. more like what does money mean to you? what do you want out of this relationship from a financial standpoint? what does security mean to you? by starting out on that firm foundation, there will be a lot less distractions in that relationship, and the success ratio should go up as a result. >> money, love, hard to put them together. it's hard to not have them. >> it's not easy. it's just not easy. >> if you'd like a better relationship with your money, how about some daily deals? we're going to have those after the break. >> still ahead, more super bowl memories and another one of our favorite commercials. this is great.
5:40 am
5:41 am
5:41. your weather first. some temps still in the 40s. we have some 60s in our southern suburbs this morning. once again we'll be making a
